Corpo di Spedizione Italiano in Russia (CSIR) (Italian Expeditionary Corps in Russia) - These are the variant counters for the Panzer Blitz game of the Italian Expeditionary Corps in Russia know as Corpo di Spedizione Italiano in Russia. During Operation Barbarossa the CSIR was attached to General Kleist's Armored Corps In July 1942, Mussolini scaled up the Italian engagement in the war against the Soviets by sending new infantry divisions to Russia - named the 8th “Italian Army in Russia” . By late autumn 1942, the ARMIR was placed on the left flank of the German 6th Army, which was then investing Stalingrad. The Italians’ line stretched along more than 250 km from the Hungarian positions in Kalmiskowa, east towards Veshenskaja, a village 270 km northwest of Stalingrad, from where the front was held by the Romanians. Behind the tiny screen of the contingents placed along the river, no trench lines had been dug nor effective defensive positions set up. Heavy snow and severe frost were hampering troop movements. The situation remained stable until the 11th of December, when the Soviets commenced Operation “Little Saturn”, whose aim was the annihilation of the Italian positions on the Don River. CSIR

Armata Italiana in Russia (ARMIR) Italian Army in Russia 1942-43 - Axis forces suffered over 1 million casualties in 1941. Hitler, experiencing extreme manpower shortages, stripped defensive forces in Western Europe and pleaded with Axis allies to send more divisions to Russia. Italy answered the call, upgrading the CSIR to the Armata Italiana in Russia (ARMIR) . The Italian units, now the Italian 8th Army, along with two Rumanian and a Hungarian Army, would assist Army Group South in a new summer offensive in 1942, Fall Gelb. Italian ARMIR

German infantry battalions often formed a Stosstrupp or Assault troop for specific tasks when assaulting fortified positions. An Stosstrupp is formed for a specific mission and its composition changes from mission to mission. The Stosstrupp are the core ofthe Assault . These Platoons are tailored from the regiment's assets specifically for the task at hand. In addition the Red Army has learned its trade quickly in the `Street-fighting Academy of Stalingrad'. One of the lessons they have learned is the use of Shturmovye Gruppy or Storm Groups to capture key buildings. Storm Groups are formed specifically for the task at hand. Each one is unique, yet they all have much in common. The core of every Assault is the Storm Group armed with submachine-guns and Penvusha hand grenades. The Assault Group makes the initial assault, taking and clearing the buildings. Assault Troops

After mid-1944 Fallschirmjager troops were no longer trained as parachutists due to the realities of the strategic situation, but they still retained the Fallschirmjager honorific. Near the end of the war the series of new Fallschirmjager divisions extended to over a dozen, with a concomitant reduction in quality in the higher-numbered units of the series. (These divisions are not to be confused with the Luftwaffe Field Divisions, a poorly organized and managed series of infantry divisions raised from excess Luftwaffe personnel early in the war.) Fallschirmjager 44-45

A total of 19 LW-F.D.'s fought in the West. These divisions were formed quickly, lacked a backbone of competent (in ground operations, that is) commmand cadre and were badly trained.Much of their equipment was captured or salvaged stock, a lot of the Mg’s used were taken from downed and unserviceable aircraft. The MG-13 and MG-15 had skeleton butts fitted and a bipod similar to the MG-34. Also MG131s were used in the sustained fire role and also old French stock such as Hotchkiss MMGs.Many of them were lost in the retreat from Normany. As with most infantry units there was a distinct lack of transport (usually the feet) what little there was, were horse limbers and carts. The performance of the LW-F.D.'s in France appear to have been generally poor. They fared particularly badly when committed directly and not in a supportive role.also later their performance appears to have left a great deal to be desired. Luftwaffe Field Division
